Network Rail’s Five-Year Plan has ambitiously revealed significant investment, fewer delays and more services, starting in 2019. Expenditure is set to swell to £47bn, a record level. Alongside this historic investment, Network Rail revealed this month that 25% of the funding is set to reduce delays and improve the reliability of the UK’s rail infrastructure. Whatmore, the UK is also set to benefit from up to 1,000 extra services per day by the year 2021.
Network Rail’s Five-year Plan was announced this month and details that from 2019 they will focus on significantly improving Britain’s railway for all those who depend upon it. The railway will be more reliable, most cost efficient, have a greater capacity, will continue to build on its reputation as being the safest in Europe and usher in the UK’s digital railway age. The release of Network Rails Strategic Business Plan (SBP) marks a major milestone in the ongoing process of determining it’s funding requirements for the next 5-years starting from 2019.
Mark Carne, Cheif Executive of Network Rail commented: “Passengers journeys will be transformed in the next few years as thousands of new trains enter service. By 2021 there will be almost 350,000 more services per year than today – an average of an extra 1,000 services a day, better connecting communities and driving economic growth across the country. This plan builds on these improvements and sets out how we will make the railway more reliable and cost-efficient and how we accelerate the technological transformation of our railway into the digital age.”
Mr Carne concluded: “Britain’s railways have seen a revival over the past decade or so and we have been working flat-out over the last five years to build new stations and new infrastructure to enable thousands of more services to come on stream to soak up that demand. For the next five years, we need to relentlessly focus on making our railway more reliable while also ushering in new digital technology that with help to transform our railway in the years ahead.”
