Here at Clarity Visual Management, not only do we support businesses to maximise their Lean and Continuous Improvement programmes through visual management, but we have a passion for supporting our community, particularly school leavers, as they leave their formal school education behind and embark on the world of work! Read more from Clarity about our most recent work with a group of school leavers on what it takes to be ‘Workplace Ready’…
We firmly believe in the power of inspiration and engagement, it’s a huge part of what underpins successful visual management, and, without it, people can lack motivation, drive and even be lead down a path of resentment as they don’t feel like that they’re motivated to succeed. The good news is that effective engagement starts with communication and that’s exactly what we have been doing this week when working with a group of local school leavers as they move forward into their working lives.
We joined over 60 other businesses and their owners to speak with a group of 40+ school leavers about just what it takes to be “Workplace Ready”, we spoke about having a passion for what you do, about being inspired by your work, and inspiring others, and how absolutely crucial it is to set goals in both your personal life, and professional career, in order to have success in your sights as well as taking your journey one day at a time and working hard.
Our speaker for the day, Damian White, talked to the group about leadership, as well as being driven to succeed, and how when entering the workplace for the first time, attitude is everything! Damian’s principles of ‘Discipline Today‘, or ‘D2D‘, are the critical ingredient to success in leadership as well as goal setting and executing your mission.
The advice we shared this week wasn’t just for school leavers, everyone can benefit from setting goals, being inspired and motivated by their work and having the discipline to see things through to the end combined with the stamina to be able to pursue work projects.
If you’re reading this and finding that you lack goals in your professional and personal life then we have put together our ‘Golden Rules for Goal Setting’ where you can ensure you’re setting yourself up for success when setting goals…
It’s vital that you believe in the goals you’re setting and that they motivate you to actually achieve them! If you’re not interested in the outcome, then why would you bother working towards them? The answer is you wouldn’t! Being motivated is the key to achieving your goals.
Set goals that are SMART, this means that they are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Time-Bound. Remember that the key to successful goals are to ensure that they are powerful and are designed with SMART in mind.
Writing your goals down is a form of commitment, you’re making them real and tangible; there’s no opportunity to forget them, they’re there! Also, make sure that you use powerful language when you writing down your goals; use “will” instead of “might” or “would like to”; give yourself the power to achieve!
Remember what we talked about above, about taking one day at a time? This is where your Action Plan comes into play. Most people are only concerned with the outcome of achieving their goals but what’s often missed are the steps to get you there. Taking it steady and writing down the individual steps to achievement helps break the task down, making it more manageable!
Don’t forget that big goals aren’t achieved overnight, it’s an ongoing journey. Keep yourself on the right track and keep moving forward, take time out to review your goals and make sure the goals themselves are still relevant and are keeping you motivated to achieve them!
